Fingon and Maedhros

When word came from Morgoth and negotiations were offered, Maedhros went out as envoy and was ambushed. He was captured by Morgoth, hung on a ledge of the Thangorodrim, and would have been lost had not the brave Fingon, Fingolfin's son and cousin come to his aid. Despite the betrayal of Feanor and his sons, Fingon remembered the times before Melkor sowed discord between the Noldor and Maedhros had been his close friend. So it happened that Fingon, without taking any advice from others, set out into the darkness alone to rescue his friend from Morgoth's fortress. When he reached the ledge, he cut off Maedhros' hand so that he could free him from his bonds. Both were carried away by the king of the eagles, Thorondor. Maedhros then asked for forgiveness for betraying his relative. Out of gratitude and as atonement for his outrages, he renounced the kingship over all Noldor in favor of the house of Fingolfin. Although this gesture eased the situation somewhat, the dispute could not be resolved.
Fingon settled in Dor-lómin until the arrival of the Edain, later with his father in Hithlum, and fought valiantly in the wars of Beleriand; around 260 he put Glaurung to flight.

After his father's death during the Dagor Bragollach (Battle of the Jaws of Fire), Fingon became king of the Noldor, but he himself was slain by Balrogs in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad (Battle of the Untold Tears).
